AP Panchayat Election Results: In 1st phase, YSRCP-backed candidates win big [DETAILS]

Visakhapatnam: The candidates supported by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSR Congress Party have grabbed most of the seats in the first phase of the Panchayat Elections in Andhra Pradesh. The first phase of polling for 2,723 panchayats and 20,157 ward members in 18 revenue divisions had culminated peacefully at 3:30 pm on Tuesday with 81.42 per cent turnout.

Counting began on 9th February 2021 itself at 4 PM.

AP election results: Reports suggest that the YSRCP has grabbed 2,319 seats so far, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) – 44, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies – 31, Others – 56.

As per the Panchayat Raj department, in the first phase, elections were scheduled to take place for 3,249 posts of panchayat sarpanchs. However, since 525 were unanimously elected and no nomination was filed for a village in Nellore district, polls took place for 2,723 panchayats.

As many as 7,506 candidates were in the fray for sarpanch posts while 43,601 contested for ward members.

The revenue divisions in which elections were held in the first of the four phases were Anakapalli, Palakonda, Srikakulam, Nandyal, Kurnool, Kadiri, Tekkali, Kakinada, Vijayawada, Tenali, Ongole, Kavali, Peddapuram, Narasapuram, Jammalamadugu, Kadapa, Rajampeta, and Chittoor.

According to the State Election Commission, 44 candidates were unanimously elected for the sarpanch posts in 12 mandals of the Anakapalli revenue division.

“The highest number of unanimous sarpanch candidates was seven in Rambilli Mandal, followed by six in Butchayyapeta, five each in Atchutapuram, Cheedikada and K Kotapadu Mandals, four in V Madugula, three each in Chodavaram and Munagapaka, two each in Devarapalli, Kasimkota and Elamanchili and there were no unanimous candidates in Anakapalli Mandal,” said the SEC.

Barring Vizianagaram, elections were held in all the districts in the first phase on Tuesday. As many as 3,249 villages went to polls, comprising 32,504 wards.

The elections took place using ballot paper and without any political party symbols.

The final phase of the elections will be conducted on February 21.
