PM Narendra Modi to Install Sengol in New Parliament Building | Know Its Legacy

In an upcoming historic event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be installing a symbol of great significance, the Sengol, in the new Parliament building, which is set to be inaugurated on May 28. Union Home Minister Amit Shah shared details about the Sengol during a press conference, shedding light on its legacy and historical importance.

According to Amit Shah, the Sengol holds a special place in India’s history as it was handed over to the country’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, to mark the transfer of power from British rule to Indian independence. Nehru received the golden scepter, known as Sengol, from Tamil Nadu, symbolizing the traditional transfer of power.

The Sengol was initially kept at a museum in Allahabad, but now it will find its new home in the upcoming Parliament building. Shah emphasized that the significance of the Sengol lies in its association with the Chola Empire, known for its rich cultural heritage and remarkable achievements.

Receiving the Sengol is considered a representation of fair and just rule, carrying the legacy of the Chola Empire’s rulers. Amit Shah highlighted that Nehru received the Sengol on August 14, 1947, during the time of India’s independence. However, the Sengol was largely forgotten until it was mentioned in a book by a Tamil scholar in 1971. The government further recognized its importance in 2021-22.

Notably, a 96-year-old Tamil scholar who was present in 1947 will witness the installation of the Sengol in the new Parliament building, adding a sense of historical continuity to the event.

The term “Sengol” is derived from the Sanskrit word “sanku,” which translates to “cone.” Historically, the Sengol scepter represented the power and authority of Indian emperors. These scepters were crafted from gold or silver and often adorned with precious stones. Emperors would carry the Sengol on ceremonial occasions to symbolize their authority and leadership.

The installation of the Sengol in the new Parliament building signifies the rich cultural heritage of India and its historical transition towards independence. It serves as a reminder of the country’s journey and the responsibility of its leaders to uphold fairness and justice in governance.
